A PERSONAL STATEMENT ON ADVOCATING FOR OUTDOOR RECRATION; NOVEMBER 2025
Across my career I have served in leadership roles with many of Aotearoa’s key outdoor organisations—The Hillary Commission, Outdoors NZ, the NZ Mountain Safety Council, YMCANZ, the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre—and contributed to national advisory groups spanning education, conservation, tourism, and outdoor training.
From this vantage point, I believe outdoor recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand now stands in its most fragile state in decades. We have lost the national qualifications framework that once upheld professional standards. Outdoor Education is being diminished in schools and confined to a vocational corner. Access to our backcountry is shrinking as huts are removed, tracks decline, and funding to land-management agencies falls. Mining proposals threaten iconic wild places. And no coordinated, authoritative voice is defending outdoor recreation on behalf of everyday New Zealanders.
These are not isolated problems but signs of a long-term erosion of the systems, access, and values that once supported a thriving outdoor culture. It is an existential risk to who we are as a nation.
Despite this, my commitment endures. After a lifetime in adventure and outdoor leadership, I remain dedicated to championing the protection and renewal of outdoor recreation. I have witnessed how challenge in the outdoors builds resilience, integrity, teamwork, and personal strength—opportunities every New Zealander deserves.
My advocacy is grounded in experience, collaboration, and a clear conviction:
Outdoor recreation must remain a defining force for individual capability, community wellbeing, and a future that honours the landscapes that shape us as New Zealanders.
With commitment and concern for adventure, the outdoors community, and the wild places that define us
TOUCAN (Tourism Consumer Analytics) tools are solutions that provide analytics processes for adventure operators to gauge the performance of their business and help in decision making to improve safety delivery and performance.
Tourism Consumer Analytics refers to the process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data about outdoor participant behaviors, preferences, and characteristics.
It involves taking data from various sources, such as feedback surveys, social media and interviews, to gain insights into what providers do best in their operations and where improvements can be made.

The New Zealand outdoors is a landscape of unmatched adventure — a place where wildness and wonder collide. My own life has been shaped by it. From childhood days exploring the reefs and lagoons of the Chatham Islands, through my teenage years climbing mountains, crossing rivers, and roaming volcanoes across Aotearoa, to a professional life that carried me through the deserts, gorges, the wadis of the Middle East, the jungle backcountry of the Pacific and South East Asia, mountain biking our forests and hills, along with the never ending advocacy fight for the importance of outdoor recreation to New Zealand— the outdoors has been my ongoing passion.
And through it all, one principle has never wavered:
"Adventure must be done safely".
Adventure safety isn’t just what I do — it’s who I am.
